Student Dress Code Policy

UNIFORM DRESS CODE

It is the expectation of the Board of Education that the dress code be enforced fairly and consistently within and across all schools.

- Any apparel or issue that calls attention to itself ( e.g. excessive make-up, see-through clothing, etc.) will be responded to as deemed necessary.
- Students may not carry or wear anything that advertises drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products or promotes/suggests a lewd message.
- Clothing must not have holes or tears and must have finished hems (no cut-offs or frayed edges).
- Sunglasses will not be worn in the building (exception given for medical reasons).
- No head coverings are to be worn in the building, (exception given for religious or medical reasons).
- No sweatbands, bandanas, combs, picks, or chains.
- No pierced jewelry (accept that worn in the ear).
- No bare midriffs or crop tops.
- Belts are required for apparel (pants skirts/jumpers or shorts) made with belt loops in grades 4-12. Belts are optional in grades Pre-3. Belt loops may not be cut off.
- All shoes must be secured to the foot by a strap or lace. Shoes with laces must be tied. Flip Flops, beach shoes, clogs, and Heely’s (shoes with wheels) are not permitted.
- All outerwear (such as coats, jackets etc.) is to be stored in lockers during the day.
- String-type backpacks are allowed.

DETAILS OF ACCEPTABLE ATTIRE

PANTS/SHORTS

- Navy, black, or tan color only.
- Proper size, worn at waist.
- No body-hugging styles.
- No sweatpants.
- No cargo style pants.
- No overalls
- No "jeggings"
- Any material except Lycra, spandex or denim.
- Shorts must be at least knee length.
- Shorts length must pass the Flamingo test (leg bent with lower leg parallel to floor, item must touch the back of the calf of the bent leg).
- Cargo style shorts are allowed.

SKIRTS,  JUMPERS,  DRESSES

- Navy, black, or tan color only.
- Pleated or straight.
- Skirts must be worn at waistline.
- No body hugging styles.
- No splits more than 4 inches above the knees.
- Skirts, jumpers and dresses must be at least knee length.
- Skirts, jumpers and dresses must pass the Flamingo test (leg bent with lower leg parallel to floor, item must touch the back of the calf of the bent leg).
- No "jeggings" are to be worn with skirts, jumpers or dresses.
- Dresses must have sleeves (not sleeveless).
- Jumper style dresses must be worn with dress code appropriate blouses or shirts underneath.
- Any material except Lycra, spandex or denim.

SHIRTS, BLOUSES TURTLENECKS. SWEATSHIRTS, SWEATERS/VESTS

- Any color and may have stripes.
- All shirts and blouses must have a defined collar with short or long sleeves and may have an emblem/logo no larger than a credit card.
- Properly fitting.
- Tucked in at all times.
- Shirt should be long enough to remain tucked in pants with belt on.
- Cardigan, v-neck or crew-neck sweaters or sweatshirts in solid color.
- No hoodies.
- No t-shirts or athletic apparel (no jerseys, etc.).
- Clothing must be worn in an appropriate manner (i.e. buttoned up if designed for buttons, worn right side out).
- Game day apparel such as football jerseys and wind suits will be acceptable with principal’s approval on designated days.
- Any dress down days will be limited to school colors and/or emblems and blue jeans.

The administrative staff at each school retains the right to determine what is an acceptable and modest appearance within the guidelines of this policy.
